40,277 U.S. properties had a foreclosure filing in August 2026, +1% from the month before and +13% from a year ago. That is 1 in every 3,569 homes. Below is every state, ranked, and what the numbers mean if one of those filings is yours.
The five states with the most filings per home were South Carolina (1 in 1,547), Nevada (1 in 1,920), Florida (1 in 2,397), Texas (1 in 2,445), Maryland (1 in 2,530). Among larger metro areas, the highest rates were in Columbia, SC (1 in 1,232), Punta Gorda, FL (1 in 1,249), Spartanburg, SC (1 in 1,262), Fayetteville, NC (1 in 1,458), Charleston, SC (1 in 1,501).
Speed matters as much as volume. Of this month’s ten highest-rate states, 4 usually foreclose without a court case (Nevada, Texas, Utah, Alabama), where a sale can come in months, and 5 go through the courts (South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Delaware, Illinois), which usually takes longer. The last column below shows the typical timeline our calculator gives for each state.

District of Columbia was not ranked in the source data this month. DC deadlines are here.
A filing is not a sale. Most states give you notices, a cure window and sometimes a right to buy the home back, each with its own deadline. The first step is to find out which clock you are on: pick your state, enter the date of your first missed payment, and the calculator lays out every deadline. See the pre-foreclosure guide for what to do first, and whether you can still get the house back after a sale.
